Last Saturday’s Round 5 of the Can Am Series for 2014 saw the return of 2/3 of the Away Team (Commander Muehlegger was Away on another mission). More normal temperatures did not prove favorable to the contestants; everyone but Roy did not fare as well as they did in the cooler temperatures of Round 4. The rainy weather did not prevent some prospective members from showing up. Robert, a recent transplant from Indianapolis, came to the track with his family before the race, as did Charles, with his son T.C. and friend Kevin.
Roy and Jordan continued their battle, with Roy coming out ahead this time, second overall, with Jordan first in Group B. Shawn returned to the series to finish third. Once again, Rich was second in Group B and Austin returned to finish third in B.
Ary raced his 917 this time but was plagued by tire troubles throughout his runs. He was forced to stop every few laps to clean his tires with lighter fluid. It seemed no matter what he did he had to make repeated stops. Although many laps down, he was able to salvage the fastest lap of the race.
Steve and Shawn had a great battle in Heats 5 and 6, especially 5, where they both finished with 69 laps. Heat 5 was interrupted by a rain delay, as the deluge outside produced two leaks on the rear wall, requiring the removal of several photographs and some mopping up. Except for the cleanup, everyone was glad to be inside for the day’s heaviest rains.
With only one race to go, first place in Groups A and B seem to be locked up with myself and Jordan, but the other places are still to be decided. Don’t miss Race 6!
