The sixth and final round of the DTM – Shapeways series was attended by eight racers. The race in Group A was close but it was Shawn’s series to lose as he was only 13 points behind David with David having to drop a race. This meant that David would have to win and Shawn would have to have a mechanical or some other event happen for him not to take first in the group.
The race in Group B was not nearly as close. It was Alejandro’s to lose and if he just showed up and ran well he would take the series. This would be Alejandro’s second series win for the year, if he could pull it off.
The first heat was very telling as David, running along with Russell and Lance, was only able to total 71 laps with a fast lap time of 4.033. Russell was second only two laps down and Lance was third with 66 laps. Not the result Lance needed if he was going to stay in front of Alejandro.
The second heat had David and Lance joined by Mark. David had a great heat with a lap total of 73 and a fast lap time of 3.958, the fast lap of the day for the A group. Mark’s car had some mechanical issues, the kind David was hoping Shawn would get, and it took him out of most of the heat. Lance ran 67 laps and was feeling better about securing a solid second overall in the series with Mark’s mechanical and John not attending. All Lance had to do was have a solid, mechanical free third heat to take second place overall in the B group.
The third heat had Shawn join the mix with Mark’s repaired car and Lance. Shawn managed 72 quick and consistent laps to Lance’s 68 almost guananteeing him a second place overall in group B. Mark had a strong heat with 67 laps but could not overcome the deficit from his mechanical.
The fourth heat is where Shawn all but sealed the deal. His 74 lap heat total was going to be too hard for David or anyone else for that matter to catch. His fast lap was not the best but his times were very consistent. Looks like the new BMW M4 ended up being a stable runner after all Shawn’s initial issues. Mark had a strong heat with 69 laps and locked up third overall in the B group – nice work Mark. Stephen’s first heat had him with 69 laps as well.
The fifth heat has Shawn running 72 laps and finishing first overall in the series and maybe first on the day. Stephen ran 68 laps and Alejandro in his first heat put in a good lap total of 71 laps. A good start for him.
The sixth heat had Alejandro running fast again with a total of 72 laps. Ary joined the mix and ran 71 laps with Stephen running 69 in his last heat.
The seventh heat had Alejandro not holding back and running his fastest heat of the series. With 45 seconds left he laid down a lap of 3.958 or the same exact time as David’s fast lap in the second heat. He finished with 71 laps, 214 total for the race and the overall win in group B for the DTM series. Ary unfortunately had a mechanical that took him out mid-heat and since it was his final heat in the final race of the series he just parked it and walked away. Russell had a good heat finishing with 69 laps.
The final heat had David and Russell running without Ary at the start. The cars were running in the yellow and green lanes and didn’t have to worry about trying to pass someone in the middle blue lane. It was basically a qualifying session. Ary managed to pump some life in his DTM car and joined the other racers at the three minute mark. David’s strong 72 lap finish was not enough to catch Shawn while Russell managed another good heat with 65 laps and Ary and his repaired car totaled 53 laps.
In the end is was Shawn winning the race and the series, David coming in second in the race and the series, Alejandro taking third in the race and first in the series for group B, fourth in the race was Stephen giving him third overall in the series and fifth was Russell. Lance finished sixth in the race and second overall in the series for group B. Mark finished seventh in the race and third overall in the series for group B.
Congratulations to everyone who came out and raced this series. I feel it was one of the better attended series along with being fun to run and the competition being very equal. Looking forward to running another Shapeways series in the future.
