I think this was one of the most interesting races as far as the cars built and the use of our rally track.  FOR NEXT YEAR how about one of these options:

Finding ready-to-run cars with nice plastic bodies and adding 3D chassis is a good idea, but Datto’s Corvair and the two Saab bodies showed us 3D bodies, and probably resin bodies, with 3D chassis work at the slower rally race.

      1. Hill climb with unlimited class like Pikes Peak and big time Euro races without a designated era.  (Like we discussed for  a wide open class on the road course.)
      2. Monte Carlo redux with an era, to be discussed, from about 1970 (Porsches that just finished 2022 race) until 1979-ish that includes bodies that still looked like cars including the Lancia and Audi super cars.  Try to have the cars from the beginning of the era that are competitive with the later year.  I think the 2022 race had an era that included cars that were too modern to compete with the early-mid 60’s cars.  (I don’t care if we have two classes based on tire width this next time, but that was fun until a modern 914 snuck in ha ha ha.)

In the 1971 Watkins Glen Can Am, the Penske Ferrari 512 car #6 ran the Can Am the next day.  DNF with motor trouble.  I take it we could run that car, but I am sticking with regular Can Am.  I also have a new never raced Ford GT40 in a livery that probably did not run Can Am.  Would that be eligible?

Are we excluded from running Thunderslot parts?  The most drastic would be a NSR body on a Thunderslot chassis and running gear.  But could a Thunderslot motor be used in an NSR chassis?

This two class system of wide tires or narrow tires, bringing out the older rally cars, and the 3d chassis more modern cars,  continues to be great spectator fun as well as driver excitement.  Very close times in each stage so far.  A matter of a few seconds which is amazing since cars are not on the track together to see the direct comparison.  Thanks to the electronic wizards who got the timing working too.  Tough sledding the first time running clockwise this last heat.  More snow predicted too.

David is running the next rally with the nsr Abarth 500’s.  He suggested using a coin toss before the start of each stage to set either clockwise or anticlockwise direction each time.  Sounds good.

Unfortunately Paddy the Mini Cooper was leaking coolant after the last race and it was not the radiator overflow tank or loose hose clamp.  The leak was from the valve cover area and was a blown head gasket.  The head got too hot and cracked with some damage to the valve guide on the rear exhaust valve.  I have ordered a new motor from Slark Racing in England who supplied my acquaintance Tom Davies with his CARRARA MÉXICO Mini motor.  Participation is race time decision if a new motor arrived this week.

I am ok with the stiff chassis option, which I have never done, but might try this time.  As for all NSR parts being legal replacements, I was not considering the stiff chassis or any changes Marty suggested above.  No changes would be my preference, but if anyone has noticed improvement with the stiff chassis let us know now.  I do not know if I could drive a car any faster then the speed of the box stock car with any clean up to the stock parts.  If anyone makes modifications with NSR parts, I want the changes noted for public display including part numbers, before the races start.  Thank you for your support!. Thank you for the exposition of your Slot.it McLaren modification experience.  You expanded my knowledge considerably for many of my car prep work.  I never got my M8D guide to work correctly, I raised the nose with a washer, the front wheels did not work correctly then, and the wires caught on the interior.  I hoped I could work it over and add wide wheels and tires like the Porsche 917/10.  For a CanAm class race I think this settles my choice on the Porsche917/10.

Penske Ferrari 512 coupe, (Brian’s) Otto Zipper Alfa 33/3, etc.  I can buy a NSR 917/10. Is the Carrera 917/30 legal scale?  Is my 917 Lemans legal from our old series?

Tony Dean won 1970 Atlanta in a 908-2 which is longer and sleeker than the 908-3 we raced on rally track.  I have a 908-2 that is a FLY car from some ones collection that  bought.  It has a little front downforce fender piece broken, but is ok.  Really does not look like  908-3.  (The two drivers are now crossing the Alps in a French Mustang on the Monte Carlo Rally.)

I will go along with the ban on Thunderslots and rely on the Slot.It and NSR cars with rules that are “open” for mods including 3D chassis, ball bearings and pretty high rpm motors in any orientation.  In other words, like the real 1:1 cars could be ever increasing performance.  Just mounting a Carrera, Scalextric, Slot.it or NSR body on a Thunderslot chassis might be going too far, but maybe;).  NO 1:28 scale cars.

I must say the Thunderslot cars are faster that I race at 12 volts than my McLaren that we also tried at 12 volts.  I hopefully continue to improve at car prep and driving, but I have been resigned to using a Thunderslot Lola already in my garage or a new Thunderslot McLaren M6/8B.  I have not made a purchase.  I was measuring the Thunderslort Lolas to see if I could put the Slot.it McLaren on the chassis.  If we exclude the Thunderslots I will work on my McLaren or maybe buy a Chaparral for added flavor to the race.  I also like the Porsche 917/10-30.  Let’s exclude the Thunderslots.  Or allow Thunderslot Lolas with a large weight penalty.  I hate to not see them as CanAm cars.

Below are some pictures of the almost finished Ecurie <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Ford</span> France Mustang GT 390.  It ran well with a full load of lead with the power set at about 9 volts so that I could use the full sweep of my controller trigger.  At the point the pictures were taken it did not have it’s French license plates (humorous comment coming) because the amount of lead ballast required an EPA permit.  After the first race (stage of the rally) the car looks a little dirty as part of the weathering I am doing as the six stages are run.  Pictures of the car will follow later.

The Chassis and mechanical parts are stock Pioneer except for CBDesign Steelie wheels and 6 or 7 mm urethane tires.  I need the lack of grip to power the long chassis around the tight curves, and the Pioneer drive train has plenty of power for that.

The Scalextric Classic Mini Cooper ran well with a full load of “luggage” too.  The urethanes were good.

That makes two cars that drew skeptics but performed well.  Results have not been posted and I did not take a picture of the computer screen results.  At one point Bibendum, the Mustang, and Paddy, the Mini, were 2nd and 3rd overall.

I think the first stage of the Monte Carlo Rally April 9 was mor fun than a barrel of monkeys.  The variety of cars including maybe the first two Saabs, a Mini Cooper Classic and a Porsche 904 certainly broke the mold.  The conversions of factory cars with Monte Carlo liveries was outstanding.  the second race is going to see some modifications, but still interesting.

In 2019 we ran the slot.it McLaren M8’s at 12 volts also.
