Hi guys,
This article shows an easy and cheap way to make an adapter to convert your alligator clip connectors to an XLR connector.
You will need:
- XLR connector – male (DUH!)
- 1/2 foot of red, white and black wire
- (3) 8-32 x 3/4″ screws, with nuts and washers
- 3 pieces of 1/2″ PVC, each piece approximately 2″ long
- Drill and a 8-32 drill bit
- Soldering equipment
- Epoxy glue
- Red, white and black paint (optional)
Background: XLR pinout
All right,
Let’s start with the XLR end. Take you XLR adapter apart and identify the pins (1,2,3). Get the wire ready and solder each one to their corespondent pin.
Reassemble the adapter and solder one washer to the end of each wire. Solder the wire on the side of the washer, this will allow the nut to have a larger contact area after tightened.
Now you will need the 2″long pieces of 1/2″ PVC. I painted mine but you don’t have to as long as you are using red, white and black wires. If you chose to use all the wires the same color you will need to either paint the PVC or mark them with a dremel.
The next step is do drill a hole in one of the sides of the PVC pipe. Just one hole, don’t go through the back side. The hole should be at 1″ from one the edges, or right in the center if you cut the piece correctly (I didn’t).
Next, align the 3 PVC pieces as show in picture and glue them together. Center the pieces using the hole you just made as a guide.
Time to get everything together. Slide each wire in their correspondent pipe, align the washer with the hole and insert the screw. Find a way to get each nut in the proper position and tighten it. I used long locking pliers but you can get it done with tweezers.
It should look something like this:
Get you controller and try it out. The extra inch of walls around the alligator clip helps it stay in place.
This is a shorter version of the same adapter. Note that I still have the one inch on the alligator clip end.
That’s it, until next time.
