The day broke grey and chilly with temps in the low 50’s for the first race of the Toyota GT-One series at the Austin Slot Car Club. Eight racers fielded cars in this initial race. Cold track temperatures made tire compound selection an interesting dilema, especially after our experience with similar compounds in the RevoSlot SCCA Sedan race. This series being a manufacture spec series, selection was limited to the Revo rubber tires. Compounds ranged from box-stock shore 30’s to super-soft shore 22’s. We, thankfully, did not see the extreme wear and clag collection that we experienced with the Sedans all though there was some by the end of each heat.
Most of the cars were very stable, a testament to their weight (just over 100 grams in all but one case), width, and good tire grip. (Perhaps a little too much grip in some cases.) As with all the RevoSlot cars we have run, there is very little magnetic downforce from the motors, ranging from just one to two grams.
Highlights of the race experience include a couple of violent crashes, the fielding of a literally box stock car by Steve where the tires were trued in real time on the track, and an uncharacteristically unstable car fielded by David. An early incident saw Kim’s car punted into the infield from the back straight separating a wheel from the car, and another saw a rear wheel separating from Brian’s car under full power down the main straight. Additional shunts in the carousel’s at each end of the track caused minor wing damage to two cars. Despite the dramatic “offs” the cars held up well. A testament to the overall build quality of the RevoSlots. Now that we have had our shakedown race drivers can take what they learned back to the bench to make some tweaks. (Or not! 😉 )
