All the competitors in the A group have run four races through five rounds of the series. This means the final round points all count and there are no races to drop. No math needed here. Let’s see how the point standings look going into the final round.
Russell and his Lola are leading the A group just barely with a total of 79 points while Ary and his Matra are in second only one point behind. Marty and his Ferrari or Porsche another seven points behind Russell in third and Brian and his now on form Porsche 908LH is only 9 points behind. That’s a nine point spread for all four of the A Group racers with no one getting to drop a race!
The B group is just as close as the A group with Jordan and Rich separated by only two points (when you pull out Rich’s worst race so far) while David is only four points behind Rich. The last race will be just as important for them as it will be for the A group racers. This mean everyone running on the track will be running for position. No one will be pulling up to let another car get by them.
Track temps have been rising and tire choice will be critical in this winner take all final round of the series. The projected 94 degree heat could also affect the drivers as much as the tires and it will be interesting to see how the heat combined with the pressure of an all or nothing round plays a role in the final outcome. If you are looking for the best racing of the weekend I would pass up F1, NASCAR, Indy Car or any other racing to come to Kings Hobby on Saturday at 1pm to see the best slot car racers in town battle it out for the top spot on the 1970’s LeMans series podium!
