Hmmmmm …. could we make that a spec engine for an unlimited prototype series?

Sammy with MontroseI plan to attend as a marshall/observer. I have a BRM 962, with AW upgrade kit that can be borrowed to race. I have spare crowns, motor and tires.

Sammy with MontroseGreat Sheets, better than one I made to look for “sweet spots” in gear ratios.
REQUEST: Please change the format for the number fields. Currently if you dont enter voltage as 11. it gets entered as .11, if you dont enter RPMs as 20350. it gets entered as 203.5 etc.
Ditto for the teeth on the gears.

Sammy with MontroseWhen I was kid we had a king track on the 2nd floor of a roller-rink. By the time I had the money for a car they closed the track! So I got a small Aurora track for Christmas when I was about 12-13. It came with a white Mustang and some other passenger car. I immediately got the defacto “hop up” kit with a new pinion and truck hubs with 4 tall rubber Aurora truck tires. One day I was doing burn-outs with oil and suddenly the car went from slipping around to shooting across the room; the oil ate up the tires a little (like lighter fluid we use today) and was a traction fluid!
I soon got a Gulf Ford GT40 and performed surgery on the chassis, removing any piece of plastic that was not needed. I soon had a lightened and air-cooled chassis that looked like the AFX; which came out a year later. I drilled out the idler gear, changed the pinion and crown and got some new hubs and sponge tires. Eventually I got some silver pickups and brushes. Both the Mustang and GT40 smoked all of my friends who had much bigger tracks. My cars created showers of white sparks as they chattered down the track, bouncing on the pickups as they wheelied from the torque! Eventually I got a white porsche and another car, both AFX with all the hop-up parts out of the box. I still modified what I could though! I only ended up with about 5 cars but they were prizes I spent several hours with. The GT40 and at least one of the other cars is in a momento box at my parents house … but its driving me crazy b/c I cant find them!
** At least I now have an HO drag strip – and the cars (from AW) are very close to the Pancake-AFX spec.

Sammy with MontroseSteve do you have specifics as to what is commonly a challenge? Better yet – do you have a recommendation for another car as backup? I got this car almost for free so I figured I’d try it out. I considered using an HRS2 chassis but initial fit checks made it seem a lot less hassle to use the stock chassis. What I did to the 512BB so far:
— Swapped out 32k@14.5v motor for broken-in Slot It Yellow-bell tach-measured as 24,800@11v, geared at 10/32 for an estimated 7,750 top rear wheel speed.
— Shaved some metal off the motor can b/c the stock position for the rear bushings was slam up against the can and jammed the rear axle. Poor design of the chassis – they had plenty of room to have put the bushing mounts well away from the motor but I guess they were in a hurry!? Stock plastic bushings were very flimsy and I guess let the motor fit fine and not bind the axle. The chassis is the typical thin, brittle, flexy styrene, similar to Scalextrics.
— Hollow rear axle and 15×8 rear wheels with P6s for shakedown runs and F30s for racing.
— Kept stock front axle & hubs b/c the stock front tires have similar profile (and compound?) as NoGrips (and the hubs will explode if I try to pull them off – they are glued on extremely tight!) Front axles comes with stock 6mm grub screws and height adjustment slots.
— Replaced guide with wood guide, plus new motor wire with eyelets.
— Trimmed chassis edge slightly to remove contact with body. ….but you cant get much float on this body b/c of the 4 sided body posts. No weights at this time. Full RTR weight not yet verified.
— Had to trim bottom of the cockpit insert to allow wires to be routed and to ease body mounting (it is very finicky out of the box).

Sammy with MontroseSo, does the 40gbp/$60usd get you a body and chassis, or a complete RTR car?
What would be cool is if they standardized their body mounting posts to appx 4 different dimensions. Then they could offer 4 universal fit chassis (per the mounting holes) that could be used to retrofit Slot.It parts.

Sammy with MontroseI am planning to run a Fly Ferrari 512BB LM.

Guys, I never intended for my Non-Race ideas (and the off-the-wall-races) to be part of the agenda for the planning meeting. I am trying to determine member interest in any of these events, and if there is enough, I will organize them for Non-Race weekends (or Sundays); naturally I will coordinate with Mark at Kings and with the club leadership.
SERIES SUGGESTION TO BE DISCUSSED
Classic/old-school/scratchbuilt Races – Strombergs, Revels, static model conversions, etc. Since we may have a motley set of cars that people have, create racing classes by weight, motor RPM, body style – whatever seems simple, fair, reasonable. Or, if members only have a few cars, and none of them are like each other, just let anything run (except wing cars, and expensive collectors editions).
This is intended as a purely fun series, as a filler for maybe 4-6 weeks total. We could score for separate categories such as: fastest lap, most laps completed, oldest car, coolest car (member votes), best condition (vote), worst condition (vote).

Sammy with MontroseScaley ‘Lightining’ hi-impact cars – Sept 25 Test Results
Static Weight: 69gm Total Downforce: 255g Mag D/F: 186g (measured on club mag-marshall)
Rear Wheel Speed: @11v = 6,400 @13v = 7,580 (measured on club tach) //estimated for 12v = 6,990rpm
Problems:
— Rear tires are sloppy. FIX: shoe-goo or clear nail polish on nub.
— Guide and setup is for plastic tracks; at the rise after the esses the braids can lose contact, and de-lots can occur in the tight corners. FIX: 2-3 guide shims and agressively fluffed braid.

Sammy with MontroseCool! Is the clock in a clutch release, or part of an A-arm?

Sammy with MontroseSept 26 – I talked with David last night and he verified that he and Jordan had the stem break. It was obviously too flexy/brittle (before installation it could be bent too easy with moderate finger pressure).
BUT – he contacted Professor Motor and they acknowledged it was a bad batch of guides. David said this was several months ago (early in the year?)
I have been using these guides, on two cars, for a few months and they have not had any problems.
Of course, the Slot.It wood guides are great and usually available at Kings. The most advantages the ProfesorMotor guides have are (a) a stem that can be customized to allow any height (e.g. when you need to add a few shims to get the guide deeper), and (b) a fit that can be customized (e.g. when you have a worn guide-boss or otherwise sloppy guide. Again, my experience has been that they are an alternative to the Slot.It guides JIC someone wants to try something new or cannot get a Slot.It deep-wood guide.

Sammy with MontroseAgain, thanks guys! I have previously gotten a few of these answers in 1×1 conversations with some members of the club, but wanted to make sure that they were openly documented for any new members. My interest with the anglewinders was related to my plans to build a Donahue 917/30 (like Marty has) using a Carerra body and HRS2 chassis and I wanted to compensate for the relatively greater mass of the body.
I only have 2 slot.its at this point, but am constantly fine-tuning my GT40 and my Chaparral (for the CanAm). I have a 962 I am planning to build up with a HRS2 and again wanted to get the sage advice from you veterans in advance so I am not having to make drastic changes as I learn more (…which of course is a never-ending process!)
