      2013 Touring Car Series Rules

These rules are based on Slot Car Illustrated’s Touring Car Championship annual proxy series. The idea here is that after competing in the club’s series, you  can use your car to participate on the proxy series.

Changes to the original rules are highlighted.

      Rule Number One:

Any modification not specifically detailed below is not allowed.

      1. Body/Chassis

1.1: Any Injection molded or resin bodied car from the approved list that was marketed as a 1/32 scale Ready-to-Run (RTR) slot car. No vacuum formed or blow molded bodies. Cars are required to have been in actual real world (1:1 scale) production AFTER January 1, 2003.

      Approved List:

      Alfa 156 GTA
      Audi A4 DTM
      Audi TT DTM
      BMW E 46 3 Series, 2 or 4 door
      Ford Focus
      Ford Falcon
      Holden Commodore
      Honda Accord
      Honda Civic Type-R
      Hyundai Accent
      Mercedes C-class DTM
      Mercedes CLK DTM
      Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
      Opel Astra
      Opel Vectra
      Opel V8 DTM Coupe
      Peugeot 406 Coupe
      SEAT Leon
      Subaru Imprezza WRX STI
      Volvo S60R

1.2: Chassis and body must be a naturally mated RTR set from the same manufacturer. No HRS/ HRS2. No chassis or body swapping with another model is allowed. Chassis may be braced, reinforced or strengthened. Minor trimming is allowed for body float. Chassis cutting, chopping, sawing or drilling is not allowed. Body screws should be taped to prevent loss.

1.3: Guide may not project beyond the body when aligned for straight, as viewed from directly above.

1.4: Cars must have sufficient ground clearance to permit free running without contacting track. Cars which drag on the track may be excluded at the track owners’ discretion.

1.5: Clear window material must be used where the real car has clear material.

1.6: Racing numbers must be visible in three places on body. Racing numbers must match. Bodies may be painted in fantasy or realistic liveries. Non-decorated cars (for example plain white kits) are not allowed.

1.7: Headlights and tail lights are required, but are not required to actually illuminate.

1.8: Interior must include, at minimum, dashboard top. Rear shelf is required under rear window, if car has a rear window. Driver figure must be included. If vacuum formed, must be of reasonable detail and proportion. Champion style and paper drivers are not permitted.

1.9: Maximum weight limit is 105 Gm. Minimum weight limit is 80 Gm. Maximum width is 2.44″ (62mm).

      2. Wheels and Tires

2.1: Tires may not project beyond the body when the car is at rest on a level track, as viewed from directly above.

2.2: Reasonable scale appearing inserts are required in all wheels, unless the wheels have scale appearance and detail. Blank disc wheels, and wheels pierced with simple holes, must be covered with inserts. For example, Kai’s multi-hole “Alfa” wheels, SCC Super Wheels with lugs, and CBD wheels have sufficient detail to be permitted without inserts, but anything with less detail must have inserts.

2.3: Minimum wheel size is nominal 15mm diameter over center-rib, or a scale 16″ (.500″) diameter over visible part of rim with tire mounted (simulating a nominal 15″ wheel), unless actual car raced with smaller wheels. Slot.It F1 wheels are not allowed, unless the actual car raced with 13″-14″ nominal diameter rims.]

2.4: Slot.It Low Profile Zero Grips (SIPT-015) tires, and others of that size are prohibited, due to non-scale appearance. Min front tire diameter is 17mm.

2.5: Minimum front tire width is 8mm. Front tires may be profiled so that a narrower area contacts the track, but must otherwise be full width.

2.6: Front tires may be of any rubber/urethane compound. Silicon tires are expressly forbidden. Tires must appear to be black. Clear finish may be applied to tire tread area.

2.7: Rear tires allowed are: NSR Supergrip or Slot.it N22. No chemical treatment (such as oil soaking) is permitted.

      3. Motors

3.1: Any commercially available sealed-can slot car motor that produces less than 25K rpm at 12 Volts is allowed. No rewinds or “mod motors” allowed.

3.2: Magnetic down force from motor may not exceed 30 grams as checked with a Magnet Marshal, exclusive of car weight.

3.3: Motor can be glued/taped/screwed in place. Pods can be taped or glued to restrict movement.

      4. Modifications

4.1: Wheels, tires, gears, axles, guides, braids, wires, and bearings may be modified or replaced by any manufacturer’s parts. All wheel drive, and multiple motors, may be used only if the actual car used them.

4.2: Weight/ballast can be added to the car but must be contained on the inside of the body.

4.3: Spring and magnetic suspension packages are allowed as long as no cutting of the chassis is required.

      4.4: No traction magnets allowed.

4.5: Bushings can be glued into place.

4.6: Slot Car Corner’s adjustable front axle mounts can be installed.

4.7: B-Nova guide and motor adapters can be installed.

Yes, those are the rules. The rules will be slightly modified when it comes to the car setup but you can start looking for cars with the provided list.

      All,

Do your research before purchasing the touring cars!! If you plan on purchasing a Fly touring car, make sure it is the racing version; most of the regular versions have motors mounted on the front – you don’t want those.

Also I was noticing alot of BMW M3 models  is that covered under the 3 series. It is kinda a gray zone as it is the 3 series entry of the M series

I would forget SCX, they need the most work and generally are very narrow cars; the other brands will all need about the same amount of work. Scaley and Autoart will be sidewinder cars, Ninco will probably be anglewinder; all will need new wheels & gears.

Also I was noticing alot of BMW M3 models  is that covered under the 3 series. It is kinda a gray zone as it is the 3 series entry of the M series

BMW is one of the model that can be used both on Touring and GT; for touring you need to look at the body, it should look like the street version.

I also have problems identifying differences between touring and GT cars; my best advice is to use google images Laughing.

      Clipped from wikipedia:

For the casual observer, there can be a great deal of confusion when it comes to classifying closed-wheel racing cars as ‘touring cars’ or ‘sports cars’ (also known as GT cars).

In general, however, touring cars are based upon family cars (such as hatchbacks, saloons or estates), while GT racing cars are based upon more powerful and expensive sports cars, such as Ferraris or Lamborghinis (and are thus usually coupes). Underneath the bodywork, a touring car is often more closely related to its road-going origins, using many original components and mountings, while some top-flight GT cars are purpose-built tube-frame racing chassis underneath a cosmetic body shell.

The way a proxy works is people from differnet geographical locations build cars based on certain criteria i.e. Touring cars, Pony cars, Slot.it Group C., etc.  They build these cars to the best of their ability and then ship them to a central location.  From there a list of hosts with tracks will then take all the cars from the participants and race them.  These tracks are in all areas and regions.  There are typically about 10 – 12 tracks in a series.  The cars are shipped from one track to the next.  From there is comes down to who can drive which car the best.  This really comes down a who can make the smoothest cars that can be driven fast.  It can be really frustrating at times but I’m in 2 proxy series right now.

      Hope this helps.

      Stephen,

      This should help you: https://www.slotcarillustrated.com/portal/forums/showthread.php?t=50659

BTW, Proslot (no longer in business) also made an Alfa 156; it is a podded, sidewinder chassis. There’s one on Ebay with 3 days left: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-32-Pro-Slot-3-SELENIA-ALFA-ROMEO-GT-used-/170933400930?pt=Slot_Cars&hash=item27cc6cb562

Here are a few more pictures of the Proslot Alfa: https://photobucket.com/images/Alfa+Romeo+156+White+-+Proslot/

I always thought this would be a good car to prep.

First post has been updated with the rules.

The easiest brands to work with, in my opinion, are:

      1. FLY Racing Kit; FLY Racing (BMW M3 & Alfa 156)
      2. Spirit (Peugeot 406 Coupe – Silhouette version is NOT ALLOWED)
      3. ProSlot (Alfa 156)
      4. Scalextric
      5. Autoart
      6. Ninco
      7. SCX
      Good luck to all.

      Unless you are

        a) up for a huge challenge with little chance for reward or
        b) are just a glutton for punishment

skip the SCX brand cars. I have tried to prep two of these (A Volvo and a BMW) for touring car proxies and found that the level of changes required to the body and chassis are simply too great.  At a minimum you are looking at replacing the entire guide post assembly, modifying the motor pod to fit a more traditional motor, and probably modifying the interior to clear a new motor (which starts to bump up against the rules).

As Ary pointed out most of their cars are very narrow, although some would argue they are actually closer to scale than other brands.  The one exception is their DTM series of cars, which are also wider in 1:1 scale.  (Think EU version of NASCAR with left and right turns.)

Steer clear from the non-RACING FLY cars; those are front motored and are useless for this series. If you are buying a FLY car, it needs to have “RACING” somewhere in the description.

The Fly RACING cars come from factory with inline fk-180 motors (rear drive, pod-mounted), they also include a lightweight vacuum formed interior. The Fly RACING KIT comes unassembled with extra motor mounts, gears and springs.

New update list of the easiest brands to work with:

      1. FLY Racing Kit; FLY Racing (BMW M3 & Alfa 156)
      2. Spirit (Peugeot 406 Coupe – Silhouette version is NOT ALLOWED)
      3. ProSlot (Alfa 156)
      4. Scalextric
      5. Autoart
      6. Ninco
      7. SCX
      9999. Fly Slot, non-racing.

Don’t take this wrong, but if you buy your cars on ebay you should race them at ebay. If you race at Kings you should support Kings and try and buy from Kings.  If you dont support Kings you may not have a place to race.

I have put some work into my proxy car but am not too happy with the lap times.  Would anyone be willing to share with me what they are running with their Q1 Touring Car Proxy car?

I did notice that the lap times for the touring car proxy we held at the track had lap times in the low 4.1’s.  If that is the case for everyone else I have a lot of work to do.
