This thread is meant as a placeholder for ideas for new racing series we might all enjoy. Once we have a few more we can setup polls or other voting methods to prioritize them.
Starting out:
Mille’ Miglia:
- We team-race a classic touring car of our choice from that historical series for 1000 laps.
- The cars will be tuned to be as equal as possible, similar to the El Piloto series.
- 333 laps per driver per lane. (Last driver runs 334 to complete the 1000.)

(Leroy Grumman)June 27, 2011 at 12:39 PM #1401If I calculated the numbers corrrectly, it would take each driver about 25 minutes to drive the 333 laps. I am all for it. Anything involving endurance racing is good with me. Are you talking similar cars to those that competed in the Mille Miglia like the Scalextric Mercedes 300SLR?
When do we schedule it?

June 27, 2011 at 3:09 PM #1402Yep, that’s what I’m talking about. We can select three representative cars, apply a bit of tuning, and then run the wheels off of them. I think it would be fun to come up with some creative scoring as well, so it’s a bit more than a race to 1000. I’m thinking best individual lap, best team lap, best averages, etc…

June 27, 2011 at 3:54 PM #1405to Scalextric. I’m up for just about any series as long as it doesn’t include a Scaley car.
June 27, 2011 at 4:18 PM #1407I’m willing to race Scalex, SCX or any other of the kid brands (except Carrera) as long as we can change parts on it — motor and chassis could be stock.
I guess that a good starting point for the rules would be to adapt some of the Proxy rules to our club; normally they allow several brands and upgrades.
June 27, 2011 at 6:23 PM #1409I like the proxy rule idea. A team prep’d car that conforms to specs such as motor choice, minimum weight, etc…

Years?
Cars?
Single or team?

(Leroy Grumman)June 27, 2011 at 7:01 PM #1411The Mille Miglia idea is pretty cool, my only concern is the availability of ready to run models. I would probably go with a resin body — there are some nice ones out there — got do some reasearch.
For Mille were you guys thinking post-war, touring and GT cars?

For Targa I would say from 55 to 68; on 69 the cars start to look like ugly.
June 27, 2011 at 9:11 PM #1412Targa Florio needs to be to at least 1972 to include the Porsche 917k, Ferrari 312PB, and Alfa 33/3.
June 27, 2011 at 9:47 PM #1413LOL, That’s what I’m trying to avoid: a field of NSRs and Slot.its.
June 27, 2011 at 9:53 PM #1414I can see that but you severely limit the RTR cars out there to use.
June 27, 2011 at 10:01 PM #1415OK I just did a quick search and the only real cars that were produced are by Fly. We know how wonderful Fly’s quality is so is that any better?
June 27, 2011 at 10:44 PM #1416This seems to be more a debate on manufactures than events. Are there specific manufactures we looking to avoid for race events?
For the Targa there are many options from different manufactures. Fly, Slot It, MRRC, Ninco, Scalextric, Sloter, Racer and numerous other resin manufactures. There are almost too many choices. It might be better if we choose a specific window of time. 1960 to 1969 would be my first choice. I could develop a list of possible cars and manufactures that would be applicable for that time frame.
We could also run a race for World Sports Car’s from 1970 and 1971 that would include the 917’s and 908’s vs. Ferrari 512’s and 312P’s (I would still vote to allow the 312PB’s variants to compete). Many different manufactures make both cars and it could be fun to watch them run together.
On a side note – the Porsche 917K never raced at the Targa. Vic Elford ran a test run in one to appease the head of Porsche racing Ferdinand Piech. The car proved too big and heavy for the smaller Sicilian roads.

June 28, 2011 at 6:43 PM #1418I think we’re all getting pretty good a tuning a chassis. Granted, the only Fly cars I have right now are shelf-queens, I’m certainly open to picking one up to tune and race as long as the rules constrain our selections to keep everything fairly competitive. If we come up with an “approved list” of cars it could be driver’s choice. Following along with Ary’s proxy rules idea…
So yeah… let’s keep the event ideas flowing and follow up with the elible car list, rules, etc…
