Series Manager: Randy A. (aka Radial TA)
Period: Q1 / January – March (2 rounds per month)
During the 1950s and 1960s American sports car racers used predominantly European sports cars on the American race tracks. Many of those cars were imported by soldiers returning from post war duties. The convertible roadster models of the various brands raced as Production class cars, but some companies were also making coupes and sedans. The Sedan class was split off and provided racing to the likes of BMW 1600, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and (English) Ford Lotus Cortina. The suspension and drivetrain improvements developed in the Production classes translated well to the Sedans. The important defining difference between Production and Sedan class was that the Sedans had back seats and a solid roof. Some were even four door sedans that hauled the kids during the week before the racing number was taped on.
Most of the early Sedans were 2-liter (2000 cc) displacement or less, with very few sedans being the FIA 5-liter capacity for A Sedan. Then Ford produced the Falcon with a 260/289 V8, Plymouth produced the Barracuda with a 273 V8, and Chevrolet produced the Nova with a 283 V8. The Mustang 289 V8 (Pony car) became a fastback 289 GT350 modified by Shelby and the notchback became an A Sedan with some help from Shelby. Chevrolet was quick to respond with the Camaro 283. Those cars became the very popular Trans Am series.
The B Sedan crowd shared the races with the new A Sedans and put on quite a show in the mid 1960’s due to the B’s early competition experience. You can look up the development of the Trans Am series, but the B Sedans became the Trans Am Under 2-liter series and in races with both classes the professionally prepared and driven B Sedans were no longer the daily drivers. The Datsun 510 sedan had a pedigree from the 1600 and 2000 sports cars that helped them, along with adoption by first class teams.
The RevoSlot line of Alfa Romeo GTA, BMW 2002, Ford Escort Mk1, Datsun 510 and Opel Kadett is available to us for B Sedan and Trans Am U2 racing. The one Trans Am car missing from RevoSlot is the Production Porsches that had a back seat and entered the Trans Am series.
This series will be run on our road track.
