Our club members had a great time during the Slot.it Group C Enduro this past Saturday, March 23rd 2013. The three-hour race was broken into nine 20 minutes heats with the intermediate heats being raced in the dark. Each team had three drivers and could only use one car, fitted with working lights, for the duration of the race.
The teams were:
- BRM: Brian, Roy and Marty racing a Porsche 962, #17, sporting a gold Jagermeister livery.
- Sarcasm: Shawn, Stephen and Russell racing the #62, circuit board livery, Sauber-Mercedes C9 of 1988.
- Tigers: Austin, Brett and Ary with another Porsche, a black and yellow 956 from Le Mans 1984.
The initial hour of the race saw very close racing between teams BRM & Sarcasm. Team BRM finished the hour claiming its fastest lap of 3.862 seconds by Marty, and 879 completed laps; team Sarcasm was just behind with 859 laps. Team Tigers had motor troubles at the last practice session before the race and its chief mechanic decision to rebuild the motor instead of changing it would be a bad one, they finished the first hour with 815 laps.
During the nightly session of the race, team Sarcasm started to catch-up to the 20 lap lead of team BRM when, on the last heat, their car experienced a catastrophic suspension failure; by the time the Sauber-Mercedes came out of the pits to re-join the race, team BRM had a commanding lead of 58 laps. Team Tigers motor problems got worse but a change would only come at the very end of this hour. Marty once again turned the fastest lap, 3.909 seconds but Shawn was the most consistent in-the dark, completing 294 laps.
For the third hour the lights were switched back on, faster and more consistent times came along with it. Team Tigers, now with a new motor, was once again challenging the other teams but the gap was too great to overcome, they finished third with 2382 total laps. Team Sarcasm only hope for a victory would be a mechanical failure on team BRM’s car, but it never happened, the Golden Porsche was fast & reliable. Team BRM finished first completing 2585 laps, team Sarcasm took the silver home, with a total of 2510 laps.
