Proposed 2023 Race Series

Please use this forum to make suggestions for 2023 race series.

I tested my 1/32 RevoSlot Alfa Romeo on the rally track yesterday and it does not hit the track on the main straight hump.  My tires have not been trued, so car is out-of-the-box ride height.  It took the turns fine, but the track was so dirty, by the third lap the tires lost grip up hill running clockwise.

Mark - I think its best for him to have the track up and running before we head over.

WHEN can we have the Race at Marc's?   During the holidays?
A New Years day  party?  Early Jan?

(un) BOX2  My F! car.  (Jackie Looks like he might be sitting on a pillow.  Beautiful tartan helmet.

Just ordered:

Policar PCAR04BMarch 701 Jackie Stewart in his tartan helmet.  Won't be changing that livery and helmet.

RevoSlot RS0132 Alfa GTA dark blue #93  I think it raced at Mid-Ohio when I saw the races.  I cannot imagine changing the big fancy car number to avoid a duplicate, but it will be on the rally track by itself.  I will definitely run this for fun on the big track too.

BRM BMW Kleber 91 1975 Le Mans.  Kleber was the BFGoodrich French affiliate in 1958-1961 when we lived in Germany.  It became part of Michelin like BFG.

So I am done unless the Monte Carlo rally cars don't get covered by what I have.

At the original class selection meeting we had a paper with classes listed. The Monte Carlo 72-82 had a list of cars either specified or suggested for this period.  Can we get that list in a proposed form on our website?  Understanding there may be some overlap from the 2022 race that would either be in, or not, like our Porsche 914/6's and 911's.

Datto  - I just looked up the Group 2 cars from the European Touring Car championship on the Racing Sports Cars website.  It looks like the Scirocco first raced in 1975 whereas the other cars all raced earlier in the 70's.  I would leave this up to the race director.

David and Erik, did you run the Policar f1’s with the plastic wheels? Did you true them? Do you expect to use the correct size aluminum wheels to be able to true the tires? Erik, what brand tire truer do you have? What volts were you running the cars?

Answers:

Yes - I used the stock plastic wheels on non-trued tires. I did purchase the aluminum wheels and replacement F22 tires for the car, but have not done anything with them yet. My tire truer is a Tire Razor - haven't tried putting the wheels/tires on it...but I think it will work. We were running the cars at 12v.

Do we know who theories manager is yet? The Mk1 Scirocco, Mk1 Escort and Mk1 Capri overlap production dates.

Datto - the decision to allow the Scirocco is up to the series manager.  We discussed it and felt the car would be outside the time frame for the current car list and may offer an advantage due to the shorter rear end on the car.  I would say this is still up for discussion with the series manager.

Marty, I just saw this car list for the BRM after ordering the Scirocco :(
I was not able to weigh in on this.

Is it final?

Ha! This is why, last night as David and I ran our (mostly) out of the box Policars that my Ronnie Peterson Lotus was so quick on stock tires. I'll go ahead and shrink my tire profile a bit. :)

BTW, they're really good just out of the box...and so dern purdy.

In looking at running the Policar classic F1 cars for the 2023 season I did a deeper dive into all of the models to see if there were any significant differences between them.

All of the cars with the exception of the two newest Lotus cars are basically all the same.   The two Lotus cars that are outside the norm have rear wheels/tires that are wider than all the others.  Both of these cars could be allowed to run in the series as long as they change their rear wheels/tires to match the ones on all the other cars.

Here is a complete list for comparison.

Randy - We talked about the BRM Group 2 series at this past Saturday's club race and meeting.  We all agreed that the series will be limited to the following cars:

Alfa Romeo GTA, Ford Escort (not the TTS version), BMW 2002, and the soon-to-arrive Ford Capri RS2600.

All of these cars share the same chassis layout and running gear.

Both versions of the BMW are allowed.

Who is the BRM Group 2 Manager?  The BRM Group 2 cars are listed on the BRM website.  The little Simca 1000's are not shown in Group 2, although I thought I saw that on a Simca online.  I want to buy a BMW and discovered there is a LeMans flared fender version, and a SVRA stock fender with the little fender spat.  Do we care which fender version we use?  I am eager to put my money on a car while they are still in stock.

I know someone will want the Mario Andretti Ferrari, but we could do what we did a few seasons ago and just let duplicate car owners change the car number.  I did that with smooth sandpaper and new decals.

StabnSteer - I totally respect your choice.  I will avoid that car.

I was actually surprised at how many liveries are available on Policar's website.  I think we could each run a unique livery if we wanted.  Having said that, I have not looked to see what cars are actually still available.

Since the Policar Vintage F1 liveries are limited, I doubt we'll want to force everyone to have unique ones...but I am claiming Ronnie Peterson's Lotus 72E number 1, just in case. :)

Ronnie was my first racing hero after all...

I would also like to submit that the BMW M3 E30 series could be run on the rally track as the cars did compete in numerous rallys in the late 80's in Group A after Group B was banned. The cars had some great results.

This would give us our second rally track race while also giving us one more option on the road track.

Thoughts?

But can I use a Scalextric, if I like the livery for special reasons, as long as I don't complain about the disparity in the dimensions?

Russell - on the BMW series - we have to select either Fly or Scalextric.  The Fly cars are wider and lower and will be the obvious choice if we allow both to be used.  The Fly cars would be limited to the BMW M3 E30 and not the GTR version that is even wider.  Rally cars can be used and the co-driver can either be left in or removed.

Electric Dreams shows 15 different liveries of the BMW M3 E30 available for sale currently including a white kit.

Marty

I think, that if we are not voting tomorrow, we should at least whittle down the list, eliminating those with little or no support.

Russell

Russell, I agree.  Let's get it down to something manageable and then we can put up the vote.

B

Guys, I will put up a poll after our meeting in which we can vote for next year’s series. It will use a ranking system that should drive out any ties or ambiguity.

For discussion:
1) Coordinate a proxy race.
2) Participate in a proxy race.

B

Trans Am:

I would like to see the series open to any 1/32 body, 3D printed or static kit.

BMW E30:

I would like to see Fly bodies (or others?) included.

Russell

Mentioned here but not listed on Marty's list is a Policar vintage F1 series.  This would appeal to me a lot more than Policar Modern F1.

Not a Modern F1 fan at the moment.

Russell

I did not see our perennial Slot.it Group C mentioned.  Is it a given that we will race it, or with the new class of Jaguar Group C car, will we wait out a year?

Russell

Let’s have some fun

Scalextric BMW M3 E30 Race Series

I see this series as being a stock-ish series with tight rules on what you can and cannot use for parts.  The goal would be to make the series as inexpensive and competitive as possible.

Here is a list of the Scalextric BMW E30 cars that are currently available.  All of these cars would use the Scalextric/Slot.it PCR chassis.  Take a look at the list and let me know if you have any questions.
