Group 5 Race #2 Results – 2015

Eight racers ran in round 2 of the Group 5 series with two additional racers on hand but not running.  There was one new club member that was running in his first race series.  He also wins the award for coming from the farthest distance away – Beeville.  He is actually a real 1:1 race car driver who currently owns a Lotus that he competes in the historic racing series.  Let’s see if those 1:1 driving skills help him with the 1/32 version.

The field was comprised of the following:

Marty – Racer Sideways Ford Capri

Ary – Fly Porsche 935 with Racer chassis

Stephen – Racer Sideways Lancia Monte Carlo

Jordan – ScaleAuto Porsche 935

David – ScaleAuto BMW M1

Rich – Racer Sideways Ford Capri

Mark – Racer Sideways Ferrari 512bb

John – Racer Sideways Ferrari 512bb

The one of the most interesting items from this round of the series was how spread out the cars were at the finish.  Usually there are many cars finishing within the same lap or only a lap apart but not in this round of the series.  The gaps between racers at the end were:

Marty to Ary –               9.76 laps

Ary to Stephen –           7.14 laps

Stephen to Jordan –      5.10 laps

Jordan to David –          9.27 laps

David to Rich –              13.5 laps

Rich to Mark –               1.22 laps

Mark to John –              11.51 laps

The other interesting thing about this round of the series was how well the newest club member John did.  Finishing with 167.72 laps in your first and only race with a car you had not driven until 20 minutes before the start was quite the feet.  I would have to say that his 1:1 driving skills translated well into the 1/32 version.  I was taken back by his desire to not de-slot by controlling his speed.  He understands that it is much better to go slower and not de-slot than it is to drive like a mad man and rack up numerous de-slots.

The race and fast lap for the A Group were won by Marty with a lap total of 225.22 and a fast lap time of 3.83.  Ary was second and Stephen was in third.  Jordan finished in fourth but I know there will be some serious work done on his ScaleAuto Porsche 935 to help catch the leaders.  He will be one to watch in the next round of the series.

David took top honors in the B Group with a lap total of 193.95 and Rich was just behind him but took fast lap in the B Group so both racers came away with the same points.  Mark was third only 1.22 laps behind Rich in what was the closest race of the day.

I would bet that the racing in round three gets much closer with the racers putting more time into getting their cars to equal the pace of the leading Jagermeister Ford Capri.
