I can see it all now......
Ary: "Welcome home, honey!"
Ary's wife: "What happened to the floors?"
Ary: "What do you mean?"
Ary's wife: "They're not the same shade and they're new."
Ary: "You noticed that.... err... I mean..... I got them cleaned.... sort of....."
Ary's wife: "Uh huh......."
I checked with two friends of mine that make custom wood furniture, as a hobby and small second income, and both said the pit box prices for all the boxes we were looking at was about what they would expect. Neither of them could build a box any cheaper no matter what the volume. It looks like we either build our own, buy a tackle box, or buy one from the listed suppliers. I would like to say I have the time to build one but I am currently working on this slot car project at a hobby shop. I know, you have heard that one.

No deal the guy I know either ... he said $600 for labor only on 4 boxes.
I guess we need to go back and review the options.

Ary,
I'll be interested as well. $200 for a pit box is a bit more than I was willing to spend. For that I can buy a couple of tools as stab at making my own.

Ok, Jeff is the owner of NTC. He cannot match the 25% by JC. He asked me to get the list of boxes we would want including scale and type of finish (stain, paint or none); he will them send us a discounted rate.
1- We don't need to get the same box.
2 -The prices listed are for unfinished 1/32 scale boxes: https://www.northerntouchcarpentry.com/slot_car_boxes.cfm
3 - He does not have any box in stock (it will be a while)
My choice would be the Full Monte - Autumn Hills Edition, 1/24 scale, no finish. This box is listed for $215 but for 1/24 it costs $250. Even with 20% discount this box would cost $200 + shipping.
Tell you guys the truth I still want to get a quote from the wood worker I know. I can ask watherver size I want + the guy is local. I don't feel like spending $200+ on a box.
The NTC boxes have a listed weight of 15 to 16 pounds empty. That could get up to the 20+ pound range really quick with all the tools and supplies in them.
Ary - Have you heard anything back from the guy at NTC about a possible discount?
Marty
There is also this guy: https://www.whiteysslotcarboxes.com/services.html, his boxes seem to be very nice, but I'm not confortable with the price :? .
Quality wise I can't judge since I have not seen any of the boxes close enough. The reason I like the NTC boxes is because you can carry 12 cars, you have drawers in the hole center section and the tilt-up lid; that's the attention to detail I was referring to and those are the things I'm looking for on a box. Now I don't know if we would piss-off JC by asking him to make a NTC box :?:
I will send a message to NTC asking if we could also get a discount when buying 4 boxes ... let's see what happens.
I know you said you did not like JC's designs but he can build anything you want and will give us a 25% discount for an order of four boxes. If its a build quality issue than price is not the issue. Let me know what your thinking.
Marty
The boxes above can be found here: https://www.northerntouchcarpentry.com/slot_car_boxes.cfm
I don't like the design of the JC boxes. The box on ebay for $86 is too small and does not hold enough cars, the second option is basically the same box on ebay with an added shelf in the bottom.
I like the boxes by NTC, the attention to detail seems to be higher. If you don't consider a possible discount by JC, the racer box is $10 higher than the biggest box NTC makes - The Full Monte - Autumn Hills Edition. Knowing what I normally carry around, the extra drawers and the toll box lid will fit my needs a lot better.
I still want to talk to my wood guy this week and see how much he would charge to build me one. I will let you guys know.
Why was that Ary? I've seen these in person and they're really nice and functional.
I'm interested in the Flight Box. I think that's about the size I want.
Guys,
I e-mailed this guy about his boxes and asked if he would work a discount for four identical boxes. He wants to call me tomorrow to discuss. Let me know your thoughts.

I was thinking about the Racer Box at the bottom of the page. This guy sells some boxes on Ebay and his basic box can be picked up for $86
I will let you know how the conversation goes.
Marty
Marty,
I currently have a small tackle box but am leaning to something more like what Ary has posted. I also have a small Carrera 1/32 case to carry my cars. The tackle box has needle nose pliers, wire cutters, wire stripper, Slot.it puller and press, oils, M2 wrench, M2.5 wrench, small screw drivers, gears, pinions, washers, and other misc stuff. It's currently a disaster and I need a better solution.

I still need to come up with the dimensions. Let me know the best size for the drawers, I guess you want to have the plato boxes inside them .. right?
Another thing, the dimensions I have for the car shelves are 6.7/8" X 3.3/4", let me know if they work with your 1/24 cars.
Here are the boxes I will be using as a model:

I am leaning towards the blue box size. I think that the blue box will already be heavy when full ... the green one full will probably have 20 pounds more ??
The boxes above can be found here: https://www.northerntouchcarpentry.com/slot_car_boxes.cfm
I have also found plans for a simpler box here: https://www.slotside.com/tt/box1.html
Ary,
Do you know what the inside dimensions are for the pull out drawers in the box you showed us yesterday?
Marty
Independent of which track I'm going to: small screwdrivers, pliers, micro files, sand paper, x-acto knifes, tweezers, pinion puller, pinion press, caliper, micro scale, iron brush, cotton swabs, lighter fluid. Spare everything; tires, gears, pinions, motors, pickup guides, axles, braid .....
Depending on the track I'm going: soldering iron, variable power supply, tire truer, comm lathe.
I normally have all the tools I use for slot separate from my other tools and I keep the slot ones on the pit box.
